They found that out of the 3,000 neurons that control breathing only 175 neurons appear to have control over the part of the brain that conducts or administers attention, stimulation and frenzy. This explains why you hyperventilate when you are upset, anxious and angry and why deep, controlled breathing helps you relax by calming you down.

For the study, researchers alienated the 175 neurons that they alleged were routes of communication amidst breathing and arousal and then “turned them off” to get a better picture of the accurate functioning of each neuron. The research team speculated and theorised that without these neurons, the breathing of the mice might get affected in a way which may cause coughing or sputtering. But that’s not the case. What actually happened was that the breathing patterns of the mice remained unchanged.

The team actually suspected that they had been astray with their theorisation. But after reviewing it several times, repeatedly, they observed something unusual about the mice. Dissimilar to the controlled mice who spent the most of their time in the lab navigating and sniffing around,the mice in the experiment seemed way more calm, spending majority of their time cleaning themselves and relaxing. Their breathing was more slower than prior to the experiment.

Obviously, these are mice and not humans. So we can’t be certain whether or not similar communication routes are present in the neurons of the human brain. Also, the research and findings are highly debatable over whether or not the mice were really calmer after the neurons were alienated or if it was simply was an unverifiable inference on the part of researchers. It’s tough to determine for sure since the mice aren’t going to do the talking.

But, this sure is a good beginning for researchers wishing to better understand the link between breathing and anxiety, agitation and arousal. If a similar communications highway or channel does exist in human brains, medication that target the neurons might be able to help control anxiety whenever the system goes into an overdrive.
